RIGGING IT RIGHT

Rigging is a highly specialized skill set, and we most certainly are not talking about politics or the Olympic games. Rigging involves the preparation of crane equipment, hoists and other machinery that is commonly used on construction sites, shipyards, oilfields, etc., to assist with very heavy lifts. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the construction industry worldwide sees many injuries, fatalities and delays on projects every year due to improper training, faulty equipment and failed rigging. There is a clear way to mitigate this by following some basic rules for rigging.

Johnson Arabia Places Transformers for DEWA

Johnson Arabia (JA) was contracted by the Dubai Electricity & Water Authority recently to lift three 68t transformers to a height of 15m for a substation in the Al Khawaneej area. Mohammed Fareed Nasser, executive manager, Cranes Division, JA, says the biggest challenge in the job was the lack of space on site for the crane outriggers, and the JA engineers had to come up with an ingenious solution. The job was assigned to a Liebherr LTM 1400 all-terrain crane due to its relatively compact design and manoeuvrability. Its active rear wheel steering enables constricted turns, which was a prime challenge at this site. Space limitations also created restrictions for placing the crane outriggers, so engineers added propping support on the manholes nearby to position the outriggers. Also, the counterweights were adjusted to reduce ballast radius to 5.6m to tackle the job in the confined space. “Our team performed extraordinarily on this challenging job. The crane was set up to lift 68t for each transformer with restrictions of 80% in safety utilisation of the crane load charts,” Nasser says. The crane was positioned in two different areas over two days to perform the three lifts safely. Calculations for the repositioning were done with a 25% safety margin to negate safety and height concerns. This also enabled the team to complete the complex job in just two days.

Johnson Arabia employs a Genie for finishing work at Red Crescent mall in Abu Dhabi

As construction of the Red Crescent mixed-use building, including a 2B+G+2 floor shopping mall, in Abu Dhabi nears completion, a Genie telescopic boom lift supplied by Johnson Arabia has been employed for cladding works by Galaxy Universal Contracting company. The scope of the project includes fixing aluminium cladding sheets, formation of joints and paint jobs around the building, all of which require 3–4 months. Johnson Arabia selected the Genie aerial work platform because the machine was required to work at different heights and access different areas of the building, particularly access the red cladded area from different angles. The AWP was also required to move on asphalt and sandy surfaces around the building, which was addressed with the machine’s rough terrain tyres.

“When we inspected the site, it was clear that the Genie would be ideal for the job. The rough terrain tyres on this model allows it to move smoothly on the rough surface providing a more secure workspace at high heights than with a standard ladder or man lift,” says Gareth Conley, executive manager-AWP, Johnson Arabia.

Johnson Arabia also plans to supply AWPs or the mall’s interior work.

“Our extensive product range helps us to be the first choice of local customers as we have machines ready available for any application. We expect to supply AWPs for interior work in coming days,” says Gareth.

Johnson Arabia Tackles Space Constraints to Lift Transformers for Substation in Dubai

Johnson Arabia was contracted by the Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) to lift three transformers for a substation located in Al Khawaneej, Dubai. The two-day lifting job was assigned to a Liebherr LTM 1400 7.1, a 400t all-terrain crane. However, space limitations at the site created restrictions for positioning of the crane outriggers, and the only option was to add propping support on the manholes nearby to position the outriggers. The complex lifting job was completed withthe crane operating in two positions. Two of the transformers were lifted from first crane position and third transformer was lifted from the second crane position.

Johnson Arabia Mobilises Cranes For Residential And Utility Projects

Johnson Arabia has a fleet of over 250 cranes for hire, ready to be mobilised on short notice for different jobsite conditions. One of the company’s recent projects was the Cherrywoods Townhouses, a residential development by Meraas on Al Qudra Road in Dubai where the infrastructure around the development is also under construction. The project required lifting and erecting precast panels and columns for the villas, all of which had to be done within an uneven, congested area. GINCO, the main contractor, and Arabtec, the sub-contractor, chose Johnson Arabia for the lifting jobs because of the company’s large crawler crane rental fleet size.
